This past August, PotentiaHR Chief People Officer Tanja Halsall raised $2,602 for The Ride to Conquer Cancer by the BC Cancer Foundation.
Tanja experience an emotional and incredible experience when first joining the ride a few years ago. Not only was the training fantastic and great for the body, but the most valuable part of the experience was the mental healing that happened along the way for her. The encouragement and support from her partner Bob and the kids during the ride was incredible!
Tanja says, I can still see their proud smiles at every pit stop; cheering us on, clapping as we came around the corner. As my step dad Berndt would have said, that was a Wow Wow moment! As I cycled passed a hanger with small planes, I couldn’t help but smile and cry at the same time I knew my dad was smiling down and cheering me on! It was an emotional ride of reflection.
As we cycled, I thought about my dad and his journey with this horrible disease, my step dad, and others that have been affected including myself. I was fortunate, that with the gift of early detection, incredible and loving support, I got through, I made it. Many people that we all know and love have not been so fortunate Cancer affects us all.
This year, Tanja signed up for different reasons, not to reflect on the past but to ride for the future. She raised the funds to contribute to the cause and make a difference. She believed that even if the the funds raised is enough to pay for one treatment, or one hotel room so that a family can come and support their loved ones in care can make a difference.
In 11 years, the B.C. Ride has raised over $105.1 million to support more than 47 world-leading research projects underway at BC Cancer, advancing care and providing hope to over 77,000 people facing cancer across British Columbia. The B.C. Ride is the province’s largest fundraising event.
